Tropical storm Frank forms off Mexico’s Pacific coast

(Reuters) – Tropical storm Frank formed on Sunday off the southwestern coast of Mexico and could become a hurricane by Monday night or Tuesday, the U.S. National Hurricane Center said.

Winds from Frank reached 45 mph as it moved to the west along the southwestern coast of Mexico about 175 miles southeast from the popular surfing resort of Puerto Escondido, the center said on its website.

Frank was expected to turn to the west-northwest and move parallel to the cost of southern Mexico through Tuesday.

Pacific hurricanes can cause damage to tourist resorts in Mexico but pose no threat to the country’s oil industry, which is primarily located in the Gulf of Mexico.
