The New South Wales Government says its new MyZone fare system has passed its first peak hour test.
For the first time Sydneysiders are able to travel on a range of transport, including private buses and ferries, with a single ticket.
Commuters were warned to expect delays this morning as it was the the first weekday the new system has been in operation.
Transport Minister David Campbell says things went better than expected, with Cityrail operating at better than 99 per cent.
Mr Campbell says queues for most trains, buses and ferries were the same as they would be on a normal Monday.
But he says it will be at least a week before they know how successful the roll-out has been.
“Of course you don’t win a football match with one try, and you don’t win in the first five minutes,” he said.
The opposition’s transport spokeswoman, Gladys Berejiklian, says not everything went smoothly – with many commuters in Sydney’s north-west unable to MyZone tickets because retailers were out of stock.
“The fact that some retailers didn’t have enough tickets to sell goes to the heart of the bad planning,” she said.
“We know from day one when Kristina Keneally and David Campbell made this announcement it was all about grabbing the headline before they had done their homework.”
One hundred extra staff were out and about this morning to help explain which tickets people should buy.
The MyZone fare restructure was introduced as a step towards fully-integrated and electronic ticketing.
