Killing toads the next tourist attraction

Killing cane toads is being mooted as a tourism drawcard for the Northern Territory.

A group working to control the pests in the Territory estimates there are more than 90 million of the toads competing for food with native animals.

FrogWatch coordinator and Darwin Lord Mayor, Graeme Sawyer, says the Great Toad Muster near the West Australian-Northern Territory border has been popular with tourists.

He says toad-busting could be a hit elsewhere.

“We’ve had tourism operators who have … said, ‘We’ve camped here overnight at places like Gunlom [waterfall] in Kakadu. We’d love to take our tourists out toad-busting while we’re here and the national park people have said no you can’t.’

“Having the people who are visiting in terms of tourists out there helping would be a fantastic experience for them and it would add hugely to your experience with native wildlife.”
