Yesterday, Greece has announced fresh austerity measures inorder to secure a bailout installment and save the country from bankruptcy.

Greece said it would deepen pension cuts, extend a painful property tax hike and put tens of thousands of workers on notice.

Under the measures announced yesterday, monthly pensions will be cut by 20 percent above a $1,636 threshold, while retirees aged under 55 will lose 40 percent of their pensions above the sum of $1,367.

The tax-free annual income limit will be cut to $6,818 from $10,908 as of this year, while the number of civil servants to be suspended on partial pay will rise to 30,000 by the end of this year, from 20,000. After a year of forced idleness on 60 percent of their base salary, these workers will either be shifted to other state jobs or fired – despite having been hired with a lifetime job guarantee.

The public sector employs nearly 800,000 in the country of 11 million, and Greece’s creditors have repeatedly urged cuts.

The government also pledged to speed up privatizations and open up closely regulated professions to competition.

Yesterday, US Stock markets suffered their worst drop in a month after the Federal Reserve said there were “significant downside risks” to the economy even as it took another stab at boosting growth.

The Dow Jones industrial average dropped 283.82 points, or 2.49%, to 11,124.84. The Standard & Poor’s 500 Index lost 35.33 points, or 2.94%, to 1,166.76. The Nasdaq Composite Index fell 52.05 points, or 2.01%, to 2,538.19.

The Fed, as expected, said it would buy more long-term Treasury securities in an effort to lower borrowing rates. But investors worry that the Fed’s latest plan will have little effect on lending in an economy that appears to be stagnating, which the Fed also noted.

“That was probably the biggest statement when he said ‘significant downside risks,’” said Alan Valdes, director of floor operations for DME Securities in New York. “Considering we’ve done over $1 trillion, and it hasn’t moved the needle at all,” he added, referring to the Fed’s previous stimulus efforts.

Today, September 22, the rupee fell 1% to reach its lowest point in more than 2 years as the dollar climbed to 7-month highs against major currencies after the Federal Reserve said there were “significant downside risks” to the economy but stopped short of bold monetary easing.

At 9:01 am, the partially convertible rupee was at 48.84 per dollar, after touching 48.85 — a level not seen since September4, 2009.

Earlier rupee had ended 0.6 weaker at 48.325/335 on Wednesday.

• The Public Provident Fund Scheme is a statutory scheme of the Central Government of India.
• The Scheme is for 15 years.
• The rate of interest is 8% compounded annually.
• The minimum deposit is 500/- and maximum is Rs. 70,000/- in a financial year.
  One deposit with a minimum amount of Rs.500/- is mandatory in each financial year.
• The deposit can be in lumpsum or in convenient installments, not more than 12 Installments in a year or two installments in a month subject to total deposit of Rs.70,000/-.
• It is not necessary to make a deposit in every month of the year. The amount of deposit can be varied to suit the convenience of the account holders.

• The PPF scheme is operated through Post Office and Nationalized banks.

A source close to the film informed Mumbai Mirror, “Kareena had earlier demanded Rs 8 crore. After several meetings, she has now decided to slash her fee. However, she will now be a part of the profit sharing rights. The producers have worked it out in a way that Kareena ends up getting Rs 8 crore out of the project.”

While getting a sum of Rs 8 crore for the project had made Kareena, the highest paid actress in Bollywood till date, this move has successfully added her name to the list of the big Khans. So far, in Bollywood, actresses have never been known to have a share in the profits of a film.

Whereas actors Salman Khan, Shah Rukh Khan, Aamir Khan and even Imran Khan have worked in films where they have had a share in the profits. In fact, among the men in the industry, this is the most prevalent and preferred mode of compensation.

“Imran took a profit sharing for Break Ke Baad. Salman has been signing all his films these days and sharing profits for them. In Bollywood, the trend is such that the bigger the actor becomes the higher their fees get. Profit sharing thus, seems to be the best form of payment. Kareena is the first female actor to have entered this space,” added the source.

When Katrina Kaif couldn’t blow whistles for a sequence in her item song in ‘Bodyguard’, guess who came to her rescue? Her ex Salman Khan!

Katrina, who features in the second half of the song ‘Aaya re aaya bodyguard’, was uncomfortable when she was asked to whistle six times in the song. She couldn’t whistle at all!

But Salman helped her out, says a source from the sets.

In fact, it was Salman, who blew the whistle for Katrina in the song. The two continue to share a warm relationship despite parting from each other.

The Punjab and Andhra Pradesh state governments in India have cleared filmmaker Prakash Jha’s ‘Aarakshan’ for screening and revoked the statewide ban they imposed on it. The screening of the film started in the two states Saturday (August 13) afternoon.

Both states set up special committees to see if there was anything objectionable in the film.

The committees appreciated the film and did not find anything offensive. So, they passed it for release after filmmaker Prakash Jha made some minor changes in it, a statement from Prakash Jha Productions said.

“It is a relief that the film is finally going to release in Andhra Pradesh and Punjab. I’m overwhelmed by the show of support from the common citizens of India who are going to watch the film,” Jha said.

“It is reassuring to know that the right to freedom of expression is a real right for every Indian citizen. We are working towards getting the film released in Uttar Pradesh as well,” he added.

‘Aarakshan’ deals with the issue of reservation in academic institutions and has Amitabh Bachchan, Saif Ali Khan and Deepika Padukone in the lead roles. It ran into trouble for certain dialogues which were considered offendsive to the feelings of a certain section of society.

The Kochi Income Tax (IT) office, which raided the homes and offices of Malayalam superstars Mammootty and Mohanlal and their close associates last month, have found that the undisclosed incomes of both the actors together come to about Rs.30 crore.

E.T. Lukose, director general of Income Tax (investigation), said in a statement that after the searches were concluded in these two cases, a preliminary post-search inquiry has been initiated.

“The undisclosed income earned is found to be invested in real estate and assets abroad. Total seizure of cash and jewellery amounts to Rs.2.8 crore in these two cases. Inquiries so far have indicated undisclosed assets worth approximately Rs.30 crore,” Lukose said in the release.

The release also said that inquiries with banks in the country and abroad are being conducted. Investments in immovable/movable properties made in foreign countries are also being investigated through appropriate channels.

Undisclosed cash deposits in bank accounts are being tabulated.

Last month, IT officials raided the homes and offices of Mohanlal and Mammootty across four South Indian cities. The officials also raided the homes of their close associates.

From the Kochi home of Mohanlal, a pair of elephant tusks was recovered.

“One of the cine actors has a huge collection of valuable antiques and priceless paintings which have been referred to experts for valuation,” said Lukose.

“Post-search inquiries are in progress. A report containing findings of the inquiries and quantum of undisclosed income estimated will be prepared by the investigation wing within two months. Further assessment proceedings will be initiated and the limitation for completion is Dec 31 this year,” added the official.

Nephew Randhir Kapoor, grandnieces Karisma and Kareena, co-star Amitabh Bachchan, director Imtiaz Ali and many other T’towners visited the Blue Heaven Society in Mumbai’s Malabar Hill to pay tribute to Shammi Kapoor, who died at the Breach Candy Hospital today (August 14). He was 79.

He will be cremated Monday (August 15) morning.

Among the early birds from the film fraternity were Amitabh who came with wife Jaya, director Subhash Ghai, Anupam Kher, Imran Khan and his wife Avantika.

Industrialist Anil Ambani and his wife Tina Ambani were also among the early ones to pay their homage to the actor, who died of kidney failure after a week’s hospitalization.

Nationalist Congress Party (NCP) leader Chhagan Bhujbal too came to pay his tributes to the legend.

“More than the industry’s loss, this is my bigger personal loss. I was very close to him and we used to meet often. I used to go and see him. I was to make a documentary on him. But I didn’t expect that he will leave us like this. Even at the age of 79, he was the representative of youth. His spirit was so young and youthful,” Ghai told reporters.

“He even told me about his shooting for (grandnephew) Ranbir Kapoor’s film ‘Rockstar’, for which he shot sometime back. He was so excited, he explained each and everything to me. He was looking forward to the movie,” he added.

Kareena, who is Shammi Kapoor’s elder brother, Raj Kapoor’s granddaughter, came along with her boyfriend Saif Ali Khan. Among other family members were his nephews Randhir Kapoor and Rishi Kapoor who came with wife Neetu and his brother Shashi Kapoor.

Others spotted were Kajol, Farhan Akhtar, Aamir Khan, Karan Johar, Rani Mukerji, Vinod Khanna, Bobby Deol and Imtiaz Ali.

“I was really fortunate to get his blessing and to get close to him and work with him. He is irreplaceable,” a visibly emotional Imtiaz Ali said.

A lot of security personnel have been deployed in the area and also within the Blue Heaven Society complex because the actor’s house is in a high security zone and lies close to the residence of the Maharashtra chief minister.

After Hrs has learnt that ace designer Manish Malhotra will be designing the trousseau for actor Kareena Kapoor’s impending nuptials. Wedding speculations have been rife on who will design the wedding outfits for Bebo’s big day.

Though there is no confirmation when the wedding will take place, rumours about her wedding outfits are all over. Bebo’s association with fashion is not new hence her wedding outfit surely will represent her style.

And who better than her favourite designer Manish Malhotra can translate Bebo’s idea of royal trousseau into reality.

Sources say, “Though Kareena had approached many designers only Manish has been confirmed for designing the trousseau.” Kareena and Manish have worked on several films. Also recently for something as important as her wax statue to be installed in Madame Tussauds in London, she chose a desi look that will be designed by Manish. The actor was shooting for the promotional activities of his film right from early Sunday afternoon at Mehboob studio in Bandra and the only time he came out for his mini-breaks, he got busy discussing the marketing of his film alongwith director and bro-in-law Atul Agnihotri and sis Alvira.

Ocassionally he would dig into the home-sent food that his sis bought to the sets, but it would be a quick bite before he returned back inside the studio.

A source informs, “Bhai is too busy these days. He doesn’t even get time to say Salaam to his parents at home!” The star, who’s just completed his film with Kareena is expected to begin work on Ek Tha Tiger with Katrina soon.

After filmmaker Prakash Jha, it’s time for actor Saif Ali Khan to pick up cudgels against the Mayawati government of Uttar Pradesh (UP), after theteam was refused an entry into the state to promote their upcoming film based on caste reservation.

“It pains me to hear that I am not welcome in a state of my country.
It’s such a shame that political parties are allowed to dictate such terms. Whatever is happening to us at the moment is certainly not desirable,” says Saif.

Jha has been denied permission by the UP government to hold a seminar on job reservation at the Lucknow University. Later when they hired the Indira Gandhi auditorium, permission was denied yet again by the Lucknow Development Authority.

Jha apparently has even left a message with a close associate of CM Mayawati saying that he is willing to arrange a special screening of the film for her but the chief minister hasn’t responded to it. There are reports that Uttar Pradesh government might ban the film from getting released in the state.

On the other hand, Bihar’s former chief minister Laloo Prasad Yadav has asked for a special screening for him before the film releases in Bihar.

According to Chhote Nawab, when the Censor Board has passed the film without any cuts, the political parties should respect the decision.

“It is being unnecessarily made into an issue when it is not such an issue. How can you decide what is there in the film even before you have seen the film? We knew that we were working on a controversial subject, but we didn’t know that we would get this kind of treatment from a certain section of people,” adds Saif.

The actor still hopes that better judgment will prevail. “I just hope that the political parties respect the sentiments and not scuttle an art form in this manner. This is not a political controversy, it’s just a film. Whatever is happening is shocking for me,” says Saif.

NEW DELHI: The Comptroller and Auditor General (CAG) report on the 2010 Commonwealth Games, which was tabled in the Parliament on Friday, indicts the Prime Minister’s Office (PMO) for the appointment of Suresh Kalmadi as the Organising Committee Chief. The report also indicts Delhi chief minister Sheila Dikshit for mis-spending in the Games’s preparation.

The report running into nearly 800 pages is damaging for the scam-tainted Congress party and the UPA government it leads at the centre since it has sucked into its vortex the party’s “best chief minister” Sheila Dikshit and also the PMO.

The report states, “Suresh Kalmadi was appointed CWG OC Chairman on PMO’s recommendation of December 2004 despite objections from then sports minister.”

The report said the PMO was responsible for appointing Suresh Kalmadi as Commonwealth Games Organising Committee (OC) chairman.

Besides the union sports and urban development ministry, the Delhi Development Authority, which reports to the Delhi Lt Governor, were indicted too.

The CAG pointed out financial irregularities in the purchase of low-floor buses, construction of bus shelters, street lighting and the LED light panels used on the buses of Delhi.

According to the CAG report, Sheila Dikshit has been blamed of costing the treasury Rs 31 crores in losses by approving inflated contracts (street lighting) during the preparations of the Commonwealth Games.

CAG has also accused the Delhi government of making the losses by deciding to use imported street lighting for the Games held here in October last year.

Soon after the report was tabled, the BJP attacked the Congress, holding that Sheila Dikshit must resign immediately.

“This is a serious loss of face to the government. The PM and others owe an explanation. The PM must take responsibility. This PM is not a free prime minister,” said BJP leader Balbir Punj.

BJP leader Rajiv Pratap Rudy said there can be no two standards for corruption and Dikshit must step down.

The Congress, however, initially ruled out the possibility of Sheila Dikshit stepping down.

“Let the Parliament first debate the report first and not the resignation of Dikshit. This is not comparable with the Yeddyurappa issue involving illegal mining and destruction of environment.

“This is about a contract to a particular firm which may not be the best,” reasoned union law minister Salman Khurshid.

MUMBAI: The BSE benchmark Sensex plunged by over 387 points to hit a nearly 14-month low on major sell-off by funds, driven by melting global markets amid fears over the US economy moving towards recession.

The Bombay Stock Exchange index, Sensex, plummeted by another 387.31 points, or 2.19 per cent to 17,305.87, the level last seen on June 10 last year.

During the intra-day trade, the Sensex had lost over 702 points to slip below 17,000 points to hit a low of 16,990.91 points, a level last seen on May 14, last year.

All the 13 sectoral indices recorded major losses with stocks of IT, metals, realty, financials, oil and gas and capital goods leading the fall.

Broad-based National Stock Exchange’s 50-share index Nifty nosedived by 120.55 points, or 2.26 per cent to 5,211.25. It had dipped below the psychosocial 5,200 points level to trade at 5,116.45 points at the outset of session.

Sentiment on the domestic boures turned distinctly weak largely in tandem with overnight slide on the US market on worries over a possible recession and European debt worries, triggering widespread selling by major players including foreign funds.

“Weakening trend in global markets and fears of a hike in interest rate to tame inflation are major factors behind meltdown,” said Tarun Bansal of Delhi-based Aquatoris Shares.

“Investors should remain on the sideline as the market has not yet bottomed out,” he added.

Earlier in the day, the government said the Indian bourses would recover soon as fundamentals of the economy remained strong.

The government said that the markets were reacting in a panic mode due to plunge in overseas markets.

“Our view is that our fundamentals are very strong and our markets will be able to overcome this panic reaction,” economic affairs secretary R Gopalan said.

“I am sure the investors will find merit in investing in our markets and the markets will soon recover,” he added.

The sharp plunge on Indian bourses followed an overnight meltdown in the US market amid concerns that the American economy might slip back into recession. Negative trends in Asian and European markets further added to the selling pressure on Indian bourses.

Gopalan said the stock market plunge had “nothing to do with the fundamentals of the economy.

“Indian economy is doing very well. Even the PMEAC (Prime Minister’s Economic Advisory Council) projected a growth rate of 8.2 per cent for this year and the government is very keen to hold the fiscal deficit at 4.6 per cent,” he noted.

In today’s trade, stocks of companies with significant focus on exports and interest rate-sensitive indices were among the worst hit, on fears that they might be affected more by uncertainty in the US and other foreign markets.

Gopalan said investors might have turned nervous “because of the global condition, especially when the US conditions are not that good….”

“And European markets are not doing well because of certain unsettled things in Spain and Italy… Obviously the market is reacting in a little panic mode,” he added.

Gopalan said almost all the emerging markets were doing well and Indian markets should also recover soon.
